How to Rank a Law Firm on Google and ChatGPT

Clients search for a lawyer the moment they need one, on Google or by asking ChatGPT. Here is how to make sure they find your firm.

A person charged with an offence often searches for a lawyer on their phone the same night. Someone going through a separation may ask ChatGPT what to do first. Law firm marketing in 2026 has to put your firm in front of both. This guide shows how to rank a law firm on Google and in AI answers, using the structure we built for a criminal law practice from day one.

What is the most effective law firm marketing in 2026?

The most effective law firm marketing combines three things: a page for every practice area written around the exact problem a client searches, a strong Google Business Profile with genuine client reviews, and content accurate enough for AI assistants to quote. Google Ads fills the gap while organic rankings build, but paid clicks in legal are expensive.
✓

A page for every practice area. Write each one around the exact problem the client is searching for.

✓

Win the map pack. Use the right category, list real offices only and ask every client for a review.

✓

AI quotes clear answers. Plain-English legal answers and named, qualified lawyers are what gets cited.

✓

Legal clicks are expensive. Keep Google Ads to urgent practice areas and track every call.

Build one page per practice area, written around the client's problem

Clients do not search for "criminal law services". They search for the charge they face: "drink driving lawyer", "bail application", "assault charge first offence". Each of these needs its own page.

When Ajak & Tut Lawyers launched their criminal law practice in Melbourne, we built the site around how clients search: by charge. The firm got separate pages for:

  • Bail applications
  • Driving and traffic offences
  • Assault and violence offences
  • Firearms and weapons offences
  • Drug offences
  • Commonwealth offences
  • Sexual offences

Every page went through a review by a barrister engaged by the firm. We worked the feedback back into the site line by line, so the content stated the law correctly. We still use this structure for law firm websites today. Read the Ajak & Tut case study.

Each page should answer the questions a worried client has: what happens next, what the possible outcomes are, how long it takes, what it costs and how to get in touch now.

Local SEO for lawyers: win the map pack

Most legal searches are local. "Family lawyer Parramatta" and "conveyancer near me" both trigger a map pack of three firms. To appear there:

  1. Set the right primary category on your Google Business Profile, such as "Criminal justice attorney" or "Family law attorney", rather than a generic "Law firm".
  2. List each practice area as a service, with a short description.
  3. Add every office as its own verified location, but only where staff actually work. Virtual offices breach Google's guidelines.
  4. Ask every client for a review when the matter closes. A firm with 40 recent reviews will usually beat one with 5 old ones.
  5. Reply to every review, without confirming the reviewer was a client or discussing their matter.

Mark up each office page with LegalService schema so search engines and AI tools can read your practice areas, address and hours.

When someone asks ChatGPT "who is a good family lawyer in Adelaide", the answer draws on what the web says about firms in that area. To be part of that answer:

  • Allow AI crawlers. OpenAI states that sites blocking its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Publish plain-English answers to common legal questions, such as "Can I get bail for a first offence?" or "How is property split after separation in South Australia?" AI tools quote clear, specific answers. They skip vague ones.
  • Name your lawyers. Give each principal a profile page with their admission year, practice areas and memberships. AI tools and Google both look for a real, qualified person behind legal content.
  • Get mentioned elsewhere. Law society directories, podcast appearances and local news features all build the picture AI tools rely on. Ajak & Tut launched their blog with the principal's appearance on a legal podcast for this reason.

Google confirms that its AI features draw on the same SEO fundamentals as regular search. A firm that ranks well organically starts ahead in AI Overviews too.

Should law firms use Google Ads?

Yes, for urgent practice areas, with a firm budget and proper tracking. Legal clicks cost more than most industries. As of October 2026, Australian advertisers pay an average of $44.15 per click for "google ads for lawyers" and $21.33 for "law firm marketing" (DataForSEO, Google Ads data).

At those prices, every wasted click hurts. Before spending:

  • Track phone calls and form submissions as conversions
  • Run ads only during hours someone can answer the phone
  • Add negative keywords such as "free", "legal aid" (unless you are on a panel) and "jobs"
  • Send each ad group to its matching practice-area page, never the homepage

Check your state's rules too. Several states restrict how personal injury services can be advertised. Our guide to Google Ads costs explains how to set a realistic budget.

Law firm marketing checklist

  • One page per practice area, reviewed by a qualified lawyer
  • Google Business Profile with the correct category and every practice area listed
  • Review request sent at the close of every matter
  • LegalService schema on each office page
  • Lawyer profile pages with admission year and credentials
  • OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt
  • Google Ads limited to urgent practice areas, with call tracking

Law firm marketing FAQs

How much does law firm marketing cost?

It depends on your practice areas, location and competition. Our SEO plans start at $1,200 a month plus GST, billed monthly with no lock-in contract. Google Ads management starts at $1,000 a month, with ad spend paid directly to Google. Firms in competitive CBD markets or urgent practice areas usually need a larger budget.

How long does SEO take for a law firm?

Local practice-area terms in a suburb or regional centre can move within a few months. Competitive city terms, such as "family lawyer Sydney", take longer because the firms already ranking have years of content and links behind them.

Conclusion

Good law firm marketing puts your firm in front of people at the moment they need a lawyer, whether they search Google or ask ChatGPT. Build a page for every practice area, earn steady reviews and publish answers accurate enough to quote. Do that and both Google and AI tools have a reason to recommend you.
