How to Rank a Tradie Business on Google and ChatGPT
How plumbers, electricians, builders and concreters get into the Google map pack and ChatGPT’s answers, with real lead costs.

When a pipe bursts, nobody scrolls to page two. They call one of the three businesses in the Google map pack, or they ask their phone's AI assistant who to call. Good marketing for tradies puts your name in that short list. This guide covers how plumbers, electricians, builders and concreters rank on Google and ChatGPT, with real numbers from a tradie we launched from scratch.
What is the best marketing for tradies?
Your Google profile decides the map pack. Set the right category and service area, and keep adding job photos.
One page per service. Add suburb pages only where they are genuinely useful.
Reviews after every job. Text your review link the same day you finish.
Ads fill the diary fast. AJ Concreting got 61 leads from $800 in its first 20 days.
Step 1: Set up your Google Business Profile properly
Your Google Business Profile decides whether you appear in the map pack. Most tradies leave half of it empty.
- Choose a precise primary category. "Plumber", "Electrician" or "Concrete contractor", not "Contractor".
- Hide your address if you work from home. Google's business guidelines say service-area businesses that do not serve customers at their address should hide it and set a service area instead.
- Set your service area to the suburbs you actually travel to.
- List every service with a short description and a price guide where you can.
- Upload job photos regularly. Before and after shots of real work show Google, and customers, that you are active.
- Turn on messaging and add your booking or quote link.
Step 2: Build service and suburb pages
A one-page website cannot rank for "hot water system replacement", "blocked drain" and "gas fitting" at once. Each service needs its own page covering what the job involves, typical cost, how quickly you can attend and the suburbs you cover.
If you work across a wide area, add suburb pages for your main areas. Each one has to be genuinely useful: jobs you have done there, local issues (such as reactive clay soils or old galvanised pipes) and your response time. Pages that only swap the suburb name do not rank, and they make the whole site look thin.
Step 3: Get reviews after every job
Reviews are one of the factors Google names for local ranking. They are also what AI assistants read when deciding who to recommend.
The easiest system:
- Get your short review link from your Google Business Profile.
- Text it to the customer the same day you finish, while they are happy.
- Ask every customer, not just the ones you expect to leave five stars.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days.
Never pay for reviews or offer a discount in exchange. Google removes them, and fake reviews can attract action from the ACCC.
Step 4: Use Google Ads for urgent and high-value jobs
SEO takes months to build. Google Ads can fill your diary this week.
AJ Concreting came to us as a brand-new Adelaide business with no website traffic, no reviews and no search presence. We built a tightly targeted Google Ads campaign for people searching for concreting services right now. In the first 20 days, the campaign delivered:
- 61 leads, averaging 4 qualified leads per day
- $800 in ad spend
- 65,000 impressions for a brand nobody knew
- $140,000 worth of jobs secured

To get results like that, track every call and quote request as a conversion, target only the suburbs you service, and run ads only when someone can answer the phone. Our guide to Google Ads costs explains how to set a budget, and our PPC tracking guide shows how to measure it.
Step 5: Get your business recommended by ChatGPT
More people now ask AI assistants "who's a good electrician in Marion?" AI tools build those answers from websites, directories and reviews. To be part of them:
- Keep your business name, phone and address identical across Google, Bing Places, hipages, Oneflare, Yellow Pages and your own website
- Claim Bing Places. Bing powers Microsoft Copilot's web results, and most tradies never claim it
- Put your licence number and insurance on the site. AI tools and customers both look for proof you are legitimate
- Answer real questions on your service pages, such as "How much does it cost to replace a hot water system?" Specific answers get quoted
Marketing for tradies: quick checklist
- Google Business Profile complete, with the right category and service area
- One page per service, plus useful suburb pages
- Review link texted after every job
- Google Ads for urgent jobs, with call tracking
- Business details identical across every directory
- Bing Places claimed
- Licence and insurance shown on the website
Tradie marketing FAQs
How much should a tradie spend on marketing?
Work back from what a job is worth. If an average job brings in $2,000, paying $50 for a qualified lead is a strong return. AJ Concreting's first 20 days worked out at about $13 per lead ($800 across 61 leads), although costs vary by trade and suburb.
Is hipages or Google better for tradies?
Lead platforms such as hipages and Oneflare can bring in work quickly, but you are building their brand, and leads are often sent to several tradies at once. Google leads come straight to you. Many tradies use both while their own Google presence grows, then lean on Google as it starts paying.
Do tradies need a website if they have a Google Business Profile?
Yes. The profile gets you into the map pack, but a website is what ranks for specific services in the organic results. AI tools also read your website to confirm what you do and where you work.
Conclusion
Marketing for tradies is simpler than it looks. Be in the map pack, have a page for every job you want, collect reviews after every job and use Google Ads when you need work fast. Get those right and both Google and ChatGPT have every reason to send customers your way.
